Hospice

We are finally home!

This week has been one of our most difficult and one of our sweetest.  Marc has decided that after 17 months that he is done fighting cancer.  He is tired.  He hurts.  He is ready to let go.

Over the last two days we have had some wonderful conversations with our palliative team.  We have come up with a plan and have invited hospice in to help us.  This is a difficult transition, but a necessary one.  He will no longer be doing any nutritional support.  His care will strictly be comfort measures.

One of the questions that has come up more frequently than others is "How long do we have?"  Only the Lord knows this; however, given our doctor's experience he has estimated between three weeks and three months.  A wide margin, I know, but dependant on variables too numerous to list.

We would be grateful for your continued prayers during this time -- for Marc, for the kids, for our extended family and friends.  This is a grieving process for all.  I know many of you would like to visit and we will try to accommodate everyone as much as possible.  Depending on how he is feeling on any given day will dictate how much (if any) company he can handle.

Again...thank you all for serving us and loving us in this time.  We are humbled daily by all the blessings that are showered on us.

With love and gratitude....

  4. "To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded."

  10. Dear friends, what a victorious faith-filled battle you’ve fought so far. You know that your courage, strength and testimony through it all have had a far-reaching impact on hearts and lives. What a joy it will be one day when we are all in God’s presence to witness the breadth of what He’s accomplished. But for now, I know that your hearts, spirits and bodies are weary. Sweet rest and peace for all of you...that’s my prayer. May God grant you strength to not only face each coming day ahead, but also savor the moments within the crazy mix of emotional highs and lows that it brings. Know that you are loved, and that you are greatly admired for your continued courage and faithfulness! Jen

  11. Thankful for the Holy Spirit's ability to take our heart's emotions and express them to the Father when we can't come up with the words. Love you guys. Please call me if it is possible for me to come by and see Marc.

  13. Dear Marc and Jane, Thanks to Libby's facebook post, I found your blog today. Oh how I wish with you that the surgery outcome had been better. I am glad, though, that at least it has given some relieving benefits. My heart and prayers are with you both, and our family continues to be in prayer with your family. Our kids pray frequently for you, as do we. We are so amazed at your astonishing testimony of faithfulness, continuing in faith. We pray our gracious Father will sustain you today, this moment; and that you would feel and know His loving touch right now. With love and much prayer, Tonya, for the Walmer Family

  16. Dear Marc and Jane,
You do not know me but your husband hired my husband, Joel Schmeltzer, to be a dba at Xerox. Apparently Marc was helpful to Joel and taught him well! Joel just heard about Marc and his health issues and forwarded this link onto me. As I was sitting here reading this God brought this scripture to mind. Numbers 6:24-26 "...24 The Lord bless you and watch, guard, and keep you;25 The Lord make His face to shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor) to you;26 The Lord lift up His [approving] countenance upon you and give you peace (tranquility of heart and life continually)..." (Amp) Please know that our prayers are with you. I cannot imagine what you are facing, but if you need anything (prayer, a shoulder, etc.) please let me know! Sometimes it is easier to go to a stranger... 503.381.3962
    Lots of prayers,
    Joel and Dennette Schmeltzer
